Tatitlek!

We got an awesome opportunity to tour the small native village of Tatitlek yesterday!  The day started out with a nice boat ride, on which the kids and I got to see some orcas for the first time!  Everyone was so excited as there was a large male and smaller female in the water.  We also had some porpoises that were swimming in the boats wake which were so fun to watch!

The village of Tatitlek was very small with no grocery store or general store.  We were told most things come by plane or a few families charter a boat together and actually come to Valdez to buy supplies.  A group of kids had been invited to stay the week there and had learned about beading, wood working and fishing.  They even got to see a seal be processed and got to try a bite!  On most accounts they are happy never to eat seal again.  We were there for the last day of their Heritage Week that concluded with a big meal and auction!  I am afraid the auction items went out of our price range so we just came back with pictures and t-shirts!

The kids and I thought this rock looked funny...
