More Pictures!

I am so amazed by all of this snow that I just can't stop taking pictures!  Yesterday we drove around town a bit to see the progress of everyone digging out and stopped to get some fun pictures.  The town is pitching together and people/volunteers can be seen on top of roofs shoveling no mater the weather or time of day.  Adam had the 8 pm to midnight shift at the elementary school and said there were about 40 people up on the roof with him working hard.  It is about 2 acres of flat roof so it seems like a never ending project but progress is being made and the town is pulling together to get it done!

Closed.

This picture was taken a few days ago.

This picture was taken this morning after our roof had shed...

 View out of our windows!

There is still a lot of snow to fall off the roof but most of it has come down!

 A view of the street.

Adam digging in search of the fuel pipe!

Houses on our street very heavy with snow.

My project for the day!  You can see the roof of our shed again!

Well it turns out my last post was incorrect...  Apparently 318 inches of snow by January 12th is enough to close down the schools in town and many other places as well!  As crazy as it sounds many of the roofs in town are flat and that much snow is very very heavy.  It finally has gotten to the point that places are closed until they can remove enough snow from the roof that they are not worried about the structures collapsing.  It is incredible.
We are lucky that our roof is metal and slanted so it will shed eventually and that is what it did last night.  When you have 4 feet of compacted snow falling off a second story window it sounds like the house is collapsing!  We woke up this morning to find that the snow that had shed from our roof had covered several of our windows so Adam and I have spent the better part of today with a shovel in our hands.  I spent the morning getting the snow off of the shed in our back yard before it could collapse!  It was a hard job since you could not just knock down the snow because there was no where for it to fall.  I could not tell where the roof ended and where the ground/snow began.  One way to tell is to step off (which I did several times) only to sink in the snow and then crawl back on the roof!  Adam spent his morning digging and digging until finally we found the pipe that the fuel company needs to get to.  Our house is heated with diesel fuel and if the pipe is buried in snow that means no fuel and no fuel means no heat...  Adam did a great job so that when the fuel company finally makes it here we should be able to get restocked!!

Around Town

Cooper's preschool!  Yeap they are shoveling the snow off the roof.  Some people even put snow blowers on their roof to speed up the process!

The roof is heavy with snow but is also decorated with amazing icicles!

On the road around town.

The Fat Mermaid restaurant

Can you imagine being that guy up on the roof...  That is a lot of snow to shovel and a long way to fall!!

Can you see the lines on the road???  Maybe we will see them again in April!

A friend of my had posted some pictures from around town and it finally dawned on me to post some on this blog!  Here is what a town looks like after 250+ inches of snow!  This town is pretty amazing at moving the snow and keeping the town functioning.  School does not get canceled or delayed.  People are expected to drive carefully and not to be stupid...  For the most part people seem to do a good job of this!  You may also have noticed in the first picture that there are people on the roof tops shoveling snow.  This has become a common sight as the snow is falling faster than the roofs have been able to shed the snow, or in some cases the buildings actually have a flat roof and those have to be shoveled to prevent then from falling in under the weight of this record breaking snow!

Snowpocalypse

We got so much snow over the last 48 hours!  It was amazing but the weather has finally broken so we are able to dig out a bit!  My project for the day was to dig out the backyard a bit so Ponzi could go out.  He has a tunnel, and although I'm sure he would love to be able to run around the whole back yard, this will do for now:)  The last 2 pictures are of the measuring stick we had put up in our back yard.  We only marked up to 7 feet but yesterday that was covered up too!  I believe the marker is 10 ft. tall, hopefully we don't lose it!!  Enjoy the pictures!

Another Valdez Snowfall Record Broken It’s trending to be a snowy season with current snowfall totals ahead of the 1989 record. According to the National Weather Service, at the end of December, Valdez had 223.6 inches so far for the season, which beats the month end total of 218.6 in 1989. December snowfall of 152.2 inches also broke the December record in 1991. Who knows what Mother Nature has in store for this snowfall season, but if December is any indication of the season ahead, the 2011-2012 snow fall could surpass the 1989 season total of 560.7 inches -  copied from friends on FB
